The Society for Sustainability and Environmental Engineering (SSEE)

Overview

The SSEE's mission is to provide a national focus and leadership within the engineering profession for the implementation of sustainability for the benefit of the Australian society. Membership is open to anyone with a desire and passion to find out more about, and contribute towards, the advancement of environmental and sustainability issues.

The SSEE also provides opportunities for members to network with other environmental professionals and those interested in environmental issues. A program of continual education is maintained through monthly seminars on a range of environmental issues. The SSEE publishes a quarterly national journal, 'The Environmental Engineer', which is provided free to members.

The Society for Sustainability and Environmental Engineering (SSEE) welcomes members from all fields of engineering and natural and social sciences who are working towards environmental sustainability.

Society Objectives

We have the following objectives:

  • promote professional ethics by adhering to the Environmental Principles for Engineers;
  • promote national excellence in environmental engineering;
  • promote participation in the Society;
  • provide a national focus for professional society matters, policy formation and communications;
  • facilitate international exchanges on environmental engineering;
  • coordinate professional society functions;
  • encourage active participation by other professions;
  • create a knowledge base and promote collaboration;
  • provide expert advice to Engineers Australia, government, industry and the community;
  • set guidelines and standards for sustainability principles in engineering education and professional practice; and
  • influence community, corporate and regulatory attitudes and practices in relation to sustainability.

Society Governance

The Society is managed by a National Board that meets face to face twice a year, with monthly teleconferences. Subcommittees look at key issues including education, submissions, the triennial newsletter, sustainability, procedure and conferences.

Local chapters exist in Sydney, Newcastle, Western Australia, Queensland (with a North Queensland sub-chapter), South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and the ACT.
