Description:
Parents are in a position of power over their children; so too, at least at a symbolic level, therapists inescapably wield power over their patients.
The analyst sets the terms of the relationship, prepares the room, dictatesalbeit by negotiation and contractthe frequency and duration of meetings, and decides how best to intervene, or not, in the client's life. Theoretically the patient can dispute the contract, or walk away from therapy at any time in ways that a baby cannot. But, unconsciously or otherwise, being a patient means laying one's vulnerability and powerlessness at the feet (or in the lap) of the analyst's knowledge and strength.

Description:
The concepts of “emotional engagement” and the “dynamic field” form the cornerstone of the key premise of this introductory workshop: ie. that emotional engagement in the dynamic field that emerges between patient and psychotherapist is a primary focus of contemporary object relations psychotherapy.
A second objective of the workshop is to explore and examine what are known as “boundary conditions” essential to the proper conduct of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The term is used loosely and its full significance is not fully appreciated as a central technical feature of both the management and understanding of the therapeutic relationship.
The workshop will comprise an introductory seminar to explain the concepts “emotional engagement” and “dynamic field”.
Drawing on live interviews and using a multi-observational techniques the participants will have the opportunity to explore these experientially.
Participants will also be introduced to a way of understanding the nature and significance of dynamic “boundary conditions” emerging from the emotional engagement between therapist and patient.
Please note, Participants will need to be willing to participate actively in various interviewing and observing roles.

Description:
Issues related to intimacy are usually - even inevitably - involved when a couple seek help with their relationship. Sometimes these issues are 'owned' and addressed directly; sometimes they are concealed behind other complaints or acted-out behaviour. 'Intimacy' is, however, a problematic term that can carry many meanings - not only for the two partners involved in the couple relationship, but also for their couple therapist as well - and these meanings must be articulated and explored if couple therapy is to be efficacious.
