World First - Journey for Giant Boab

This giant boab tree in Kings Park is a special gift to all Western Australians from the Gija people, the traditional land owners of the Warnum area of WA’s Kimberley region.

Indigenous people value boabs for their edible fruits, medicinal uses and water-holding properties.

Transporting Gija Jumulu, as the tree is named, 3200km to Perth attracted world-wide media attention. This had never been achieved over land before for tree of this size. Estimated to be 750 years old, Gija Jumulu weighs 36 tonnes, stands 14 metres tall and eight metres wide (branch span).
